They never got the $2 back, so it doesn't enter into the equation - just the $3 (room=$25 $3 = $28, not $27). Nothing really amazing about that.

in the last week on this site. It is a funny joke, but hardly unbelieveable. The answer is quite simple, but I will leave it to those to figure it out. It is a very entertaining joke and story, and I tell it myself.

There isnt any money missing... The price of the room is $25 each one of the three men have $1 a piece and the belhop has $2 all totaling $30. There's no money missing! It's Great! I love brain teasers!

1st u take 5 dollars away from the 30 due to the manager handin over 5 dollars then that leaves the tourist still wantin there 3 dollars so he gives them a dollar each so that each 25+3 = 28 dollars.. then on top of it the man still has 2dollars left over in which he keeps

What tricks u is that when u minus 3 dollars u think its correct because the way it sounds but infact u should be addin the 3 dollars onto the 25 because u r takin away from the total sum not the sum of the tourist inwhich paid.

there is a lil trick in the question i figure the math in 2 seconds it took me a little longer to find the trick in the question, see he says each man paid 9 dollars and that = 27 wich is true and then says the bellhop has 2 dollars in his pocket so wheres the last dollar, heres the thing they paid 25 for the room and then the bellhop took 2 that comes to 27 to that u add the 3 dolars the mens got back and u get 30,what the bell hop took is in the 27 dollars easy!!

Each man still has 1 dollar... thats 3 dollars.

he makes you add the $2 dollars but your supposed to subtract it. When you do that it equals $25. Simple.

If they paid 30 dollars and got 5 dollars off then they paid only 25 dollars. So 25 dollars plus the 3 they got back and the 2 the bell boy kept equals 30. SO theres no missing dollar

I wasn't confused by the problem. I was just wondering what's the point. The bellhop gives them each a dollar (3 dollars). I was thinking why in the world is he adding 2 dollars back into the whole when he is supposed to subtract it to 25. lol

trick. People get so confused with the right words said that they strike a blank. It is very simple. You cant take the 3 men individually you will have to take them as one and then you will get the answer within second. 3 men paid $30 the man took $25 for the room. $2 for himself and gave $3 back to the 3 men. And that = $30!

that goes to 30$....no reason to be thinking of this!

if you have although the men paid $9 each that is what paid although however if the ball hop hadnt taken The $2 the would and divided it correctly they would have paid $8.33* eg: 10x3 = 30, 30-5 = 25, 25div3 = 8.33*

so the trick is in the riddle although the men thought they paid $9 they actually got ripped off how were they supposed to know they were only to pay $8.33*

think about it, each room now costs 25€, the guy gives 3€ back to each, that doesnt mean they have 9€ per room, it means each room now costs 25€ divided by 3, wich = to 8.33(3) per person, now he gave 3€ back to each, so it makes 8.33(3) + 1 and then multiple it by 3, wich = to 28 [9.33(3) x3] plus the 2 the other guy kept makes 30... blah ^^

Technically they didn't pay $9 each...they really paid $25 so the guy gave back $3 and kept two...25 3 2= $30....right? How was that hard.....?

this is a neat trick, but its pretty old... most people have already heard this. It was asked in my highschool calc class and there were only like 3 people who didnt figure it out... so i dont know about the 97% thing....

Anybody remember order of operations from math class? You can't arbitrarily choose what order you do your math in. His math is flawed in the "finale".

The room cost $25.00
The Bell Hop keeps $2.00
Thats a total room cost of $27.oo (divide it 3 way and each man has payed $9.00 ea.) That left $1.00 ea. for each of the three men. Which accounts for the whole original $30.00

yeah just think about this for a minute he "TRICKS" you into thinking that they paid $27 for the room... they paid $25 for the room, but the bell hop kept $2 so he kept the two and then gave them $3 back one a piece... so $25(for room)+$2(bell hop kept it)+$3($1 for each of the guys)=$30

when the bellhop gives them 5 dollars back, that means they paied 25 dollars all togther. 3 dollars given to them is not 27,(dumbass) it is 28. then the other 2 dollars

the $2 in the bellhop's pocket shouldn't get added to $27, it should get subtracted, because it's part of the $5 given back. the story-teller's misleading statements make this one unsolvable

But i'm pretty sure half the people who commented on this sayin, *yawn* that was easy actually went to the website to find out.

Everybody figured this out in our house even my 12 year old son who flunked math last year.

Here's the fault in the logic. He asks what happened to the extra dollar missing from the $30, but the number 30 is no longer a part of the equation when when the amount they paid now adds up to $27. Simple.

It looked like the starting Foreigner music video...what did the earth and stars have anything to do with the three men at the beginning? Not a mystery..lol..but the woman biting her finger got my attention..good job!

the original mistake is not taking the bellhops honesty into the question. There was no mistake, he pocketed 5 dollars of the original 30, so now he has 5+2=7, the men have a dollar each so 3+7=10, plus the 25 dollars for the room makes 35$ and only 30 dollars being initially exchanged so there is a dicrepency of 5$ and the hotels refund of 5$ means the hotel is down $10 so now we have the current finacial statues of the parties involved. the bellhop is +7, the guests are +3 and the hotel are +15 which all adds up to $25. so where is the 5$

The three men paid 10 dollars each.
10 x 3 = 30 dollars
so let's say the shopkeeper now has 30 dollars, he takes away 5, and now he has 25.
3 of those 5 dollars, goes to the men, and now there's 28 dollars, we know where are. The last two dollars he kept, so he ends up with 25 2 = 27, and the last three, the men have.

I can't believe out of 197 people, none of you has gotten this. That is much less than 3%. I got it after thinking about it for about 1 minute, and I am a male. Here's the answer:

They paid $25 dollars for the room instead of $30. $25/3 = $8.33 paid by each of the men (not $9 each). ($8.33 +$1.00)*3 = $28.00 + $2 in bellhops pocket = $30 total given to manager before the mistake was corrected.
